Feds authorize emergency funds to repair Critical Trucking Routes

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently authorized $134 million in emergency funds to assist North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee with restoring infrastructure to the trucking routes damaged by Hurricane Helene, just before Hurricane Milton’s approach. This funding, sourced from the Highway Trust Fund, supports critical repairs to federal-aid highways and federal lands affected by natural disasters.

North Carolina receives the largest portion on the funding

North Carolina, heavily impacted by Helene, received $100 million, the largest portion of the funds, to repair extensive damage, particularly along Interstate 40. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has mobilized over 2,100 employees and 1,100 pieces of equipment to restore 4,700 road sites. With 27 counties declared major disaster areas, relief efforts include deploying 3,000 soldiers and airmen and providing food, water, and shelter for displaced residents.

Tennessee awarded 32 Million

Tennessee, awarded $32 million, faced widespread road and bridge damage. Recovery operations involve 600 National Guardsmen and first responders delivering essentials and clearing debris. Emergency funds will help restore critical sections of I-40 and I-26 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border.
