Who IS Hattiesburg Diesel Truck Repair anyway?
Straight outta the swamps of the Southern Gulf Coast
I was born and raised in the swamps of southern Louisiana. We were one of those families that really lived in what yall would call the “country” we called it the swamps. My family lived in an area so rural that we grew up hunting and fishing all over the area where we lived. Huge tracts of land thousands of acres that are now fenced in and developed but when I was a kid they were open woods with trails for riding horses of which there were many, dirtbikes, hiking hunting, fishing and just enjoyin being a kid.
Our Swamp and country heratige made repairing machines tractors trucks and anything else we needed, simply a way of life for my family and our ancestors.
Learning the Mechanics of Boats Trucks and Tractors
When you live waaaay out in the swapms going to the store to get extra parts was usually not an option or at least not an easy one, Our people learned to work with what they had and to rework and reuse parts whenever posible. I can remember helping to rebuild the engine on my uncles Crabbing boat when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I didn’t know much at that age, but I learned to fetch tools and coffee and maybe more importantly I learned about COMMUNITY. You see where I grew up we still believed in helping our neighbors. They still live that today. Any time a boat when down or a truck broke down or a roof started leakin, we’d all pitched in to help out then wed have a big potluck supper for everyone and celebrate after we were finished with the job. Back in those days most of my family and relatives were commercial fisherman. I still have a lot of family down there that fish professionally. Its a beautiful way of life to live in daily connection with mother nature and one that teached you to be a great mechanic by necessity. When you break down out on the bayou aint nobody comin to save you (well not till after dark anyway were talking about well before the days of cell phones) so you gotta get creative. I never met a great fisherman that wasn’t also a pretty good mechanic.
Deer season
As a Kid growing up in the swamps there were basically 2 seasons: Hunting season which really meant Deer season and the rest of the year. If it was Deer season I was in the woods period point blank end of story. In fact the town I lived in threw a big parade with floats and horses and all! School was out the day before the start of deer season so folks could get ready for opening day. To say I grew up in an area that loved to hunt would be an understatement. Of course all the BEST deer hunting spots required a pirogue which is a kind of handmade canoe. Learning to build and maintain your own pirogue was a rite of passage and kind of the entry into manhood. it said to the community I’m no longer a kid I’m a man with all the privledges and responsibilities that go along with that.
Gator season
Of course we also had GATOR season which fortunately for me, was oposite of deer season So I was able to participate in that tradition many times over the years. A lot of the old timers the really swampy old coots that spoke a kind of Cajun French….. those were the best alligator hunters around. Even though Gator season was short many of the old cajuns made a big chunk of their yearly income from the gators hunted and sold during that short wondow. I’ll Never forget going with my dad and his bother we’d get out in the swamps and hed get OUT OF THE BOAT and walk along the edge of the bayou and hed reach his bare hands onder the banks looking for alligators. He had a technique that had been passed down generation to generation of Noodling for the gators with his bare hands. He always caught a lot of gators but i have to admit he was missing the tip off of several fingers off his noodling hand!! He’d always say “Get ouT da boat boy da gaters in Hera not in da boat!” Yeah ok no thanks I’m good in here LOL. He was a cajun character for sure.
Why should I care?
Well its just good to know who your dealing with and whether your a trucker looking to drop that load on time or a farmer needing to get that crop cut or planted you need to know that whoever you call has the Knowledge and the integrity to repair your Diesel Truck or Heavy Equipment.
That first peice the Knowledge is improtant. You can not over estimate HOW improtant it is to have a lifetime of real world experiences that yopu cant learn in books. Dont get me wrong I have nothing against Diesel repair school but agter 30 years experience I will still say LIFE is the best teacher. You can learn in a book to connect part a to part B but thats about it. You just can’t really learn to be a mechanic from any book. Learning to be a great mechanic requires a passion to know how things work as well as a grizzsley old coot whos willing to take you under his narled cigar smoking wing and teach you how to really do the job. Ya need a good mentor. The kind of guy who shows up 30 minutes early so you can sit down have a cup of coffee and decide in your mind how your gonna tackle the days projects. I’ve been super fortunate to have several of those old timers that were willing to teach a young pup the old dog tricks.
The second part of our recipe is the integrity, the Honesty. Without honesty you don’t have a business. I look at it like this. Were both out here trying against the odds to work for ourselves. Tryan to build a dream and a life that doesn’t require punching a clock for another man. We are both out here working to put food on our table and I want to be your partner in that endevor. Even if our paths never cross again and I hope they do, I sleep good at night knowing that I provided you a great service at a fair price and were both better for having joined forces.
